The BJP’s open secret

First of all, let me thank Sandeep for having alerted his readers to Koenraad Elst’s Op-Ed in The Pioneer. Secondly, I am very happy to see Shri Elst back after such a long time. I hope his health is much better now.

The point Shri Elst makes in his brief observation of the BJP’s defeat in the recent Parliamentary elections is the Open Secret. The secret is hidden only from those who seem to be deliberately devious or too trusting of the BJP’s innocent protestations.

In this website I make similar observations here and here. The root cause for the party’s defeat does not lie in the campaign, does not lie in Shri Advani’s criticism of Shri Singh, does not lie in what Shri Pronnoy Roy calls Shri Advani’s “Jinnah moment” and “Varun moment”; (implying collapse and surrender to the “extremists” when decisive action was called for.). The root cause lies in the debilitating existential confusion wrt ideology. What is the BJP here for? What is it’s purpose? How does it justify it’s existence? What are the real (minus the rhetoric) departure points from it’s Congress and Secular rivals?

Unless all of these very gray areas are cleared up there is no hope. As prime party candidate Shri Advani of course takes the responsibility for not just the defeat but also for the ideological confusion that confounds; but any normal human being cannot blame Shri Advani solely. There is an entire phalanx of confused and unscrupulous “leaders” in that party that deserve to be (I’m sorry about this hated Stalinist term) purged. One may also wonder if this is the case with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh too. I for one am convinced that the mother-board is corrupted.
